Officials in Sacramento County are examining a shooting incident that broke out Saturday night April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area at the time officers were breaking up a large unsanctioned party of several hundred people.
How It Started
Law enforcement were first dispatched to Howe Park shortly before half past six in the evening after learning of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Soon after, additional information came in concerning an alleged brawl breaking out near the park.
An overhead unit scanned the area from the air but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Even so, it became clear that a crowd of several hundred had assembled at the park without permission.
When the Shots Rang Out
Deputies set about removing people from the park by encircling the gathering and making announcements commanding the assembled crowd to leave immediately. Approximately 15 minutes were allowed for people to comply.
While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that between 20 and 25 rounds echoed through the night. The rapid succession of Arden Arcade Sacramento crime 2026 shots triggered a stampede. Officers swiftly started locating gunshot victims.
Those Who Were Hit
By the time the scene was secured, four people were confirmed as gunshot victims. The victims — consisting of one woman and three men each reported to be in their 20s — were transported to nearby hospitals. Doctors and nurses stated that two had critical injury classifications, one sustained moderate wounds, and one had injuries classified as minor. According to authorities, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department provided support and helped care for shooting victims prior to hospital transport.
Crime Scene Evidence
The primary shooting scene appears to have happened on the Cottage Way side of the park adjacent to the local Home Depot on the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators recovered additional spent rounds on the Cottage Way roadway. Bullet damage were discovered in the wrought iron perimeter fencing alongside the Home Depot store. The physical evidence indicated that at least one shooter had been shooting in a southerly direction from along Cottage Way toward the Home Depot. The nearby Home Depot was temporarily locked down during the incident. CSI investigators and detectives worked tirelessly through the early morning hours.
Suspect Information
Details gathered over scanner radio traffic established that a Kia vehicle had been detained in the Solano County area. Four occupants were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Law enforcement units were sent to retrieve the detainees to return them to Sacramento for investigation. Video reviewed at the scene showed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
